What's the point?

In a quick overview, what is the point of what Oscar Wilde was trying to say by writing this book? Is it significant that he didn't want us to analyze it?

  1. I think he was trying to show people how easy it is to put on a mask and do bad things and cover up our own true beauty. Also I think Oscar Wilde wanted us to analyze the book because he said on the back, Lord Henry is what i am, Dorian is what i want to be.

  2. I feel like Oscar Wilde was trying to say that influences are what make up are inner and outer beauty, but you have the decision to make it what you want. you can either take the good influences and despise the bad or other way around. This is where we see the good and bad in everybody, but the choice is yours.

  3. I think Wilde was trying to prove a point that you create the person you become. You have to absorb everything that is thrown at you and view it through the lens that is your own specific personality. I agree with Anthony, I think that he did not want us to analyze this book because as he said all of the characters represent some part of him and by analyzing the book we would be analyzing him.

  4. I think that the point that Wilde was trying to get across was that you have to take responsibility for your actions and make the choices that you think are right while staying true to yourself. We are not able to hide our sins in a portrait like Dorian Grey did so we need to be able to think about the consequences that will come from our actions before we actually do them. I think that he did not want us to analyze it because he wanted us to make those realizations on our own and to learn from the mistakes that we make in our life.

  5. I think that the short dead dude was merely supporting his earlier comment. He said "there are no moral books just good books" meaning that there is no point in reading for analysis. Dorian was a character portrayed as potential immortality and promoted hedonistic views but in the end still met his accidental suicide. Therefore, because Dorian turned out hating the person he became; Oscar Wilde would agree with, "Do what you like, like what you do because we all reach the same end."

  6. I feel like Oscar Wilde was just trying to prove a point on caring for who you are and doing the right thing. Wilde didn't want us to analyze it, because it was too simple of a moral to analyze. People need to do the right thing, otherwise they could end up hating themselves for it.

  7. I feel that Oscar Wilde is making the point to watch your self and your actions because they will effect you for the rest of your life. And I think that Oscar Wilde said he didn't want us to analyze it, so we would automatically want to analyze it. I think that there is more meaning to the book then just to story that Oscar wrote. I think he wanted us to analyze it and come up with out own interpretation of the book.

  8. I believe that Oscar Wilde was was making a point about how everyone has two sides to themselves. One side is our physical outside form which everyone sees which is affected by the other side which is our soul. Oscar Wilde was trying to make the point that our physical selves are not marred by what we do. Our souls though are affected and change from our deeds and actions. I believe Oscar Wilde wouldn't have cared if we had analyzed his writing, though he says that art is just art in itself there will always be hidden meaning.

  9. I think he was trying to make the point of people can put on a mask to cover up who they truly are. But at the same time, if they show people in the world their ture self, people could judge them for doing that. I also think that at the same time you are who you are from how you were raised and what that all meant to you later on in life.

  10. The point of the book was that everyone has their demons. You can either become victim to them by being consumed or you over come them. It is all a matter of whether you are willing to accept the demons you have inside of you and fight them.
